Understanding ADHD Symptoms?

Many people want to know what exactly is ADHD?  The scientific answer is a neuro-biological disorder found mainly in the prefrontal cortex of the brain.  Some people call it a disorder and others define it as a gift.  ADHD affects all areas of the brain somewhat to a degree... mostly it will affect your logical process functions.  Thats the front location of the brain that executes the thought process, organizes ideas, and takes action.

People with ADHD have trouble keeping attention on the daily activities like housework, school, and paperwork.  The downside is that these are core functions that are needed in life to function properly.  People that experience Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder have minds that daydream often and are easily distracted by their surroundings.  The ironic thing is that sufferers have very few problems concentrating on new items because they provide enough stimulation that allows the brain to focus on what they are doing.

A common problem is the lack of organizational skills.  Any projects that involve long time periods, large spaces, or lack of follow through are a real concern for people close to them.  Larges spaces often lead to extreme disorganization, and even after they are clean, have trouble maintaining the cleanliness.  ADHD sufferers have trouble dealing with long term planning and go from crisis to crisis instead because it provides immediate stimulation that long term tasks can't bring.

Follow through is a consatant challenge for ADHD people.  The inability to organize their surroundings is a real burden on their life.  Most people with ADHD have an excesive amount of ideas that are very interesting to them and often stimulating in the beginning. But it's when the specific details and constant preparation come into play that sufferers of ADHD have issues dealing with problems.  Any interest or passion that requires long-term attention and maintenance will cause the ADHD person to lose interest.

It is still not known exactly why people are born with ADHD.  It is known that many cases are genetic, but not all. Doctors do know that the way your brain is wired will determine whether you have ADHD or not.  People with ADHD have a low level of dopamine in their brains. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that affects focus and attention.

At this point is where counseling and medication may be a great way to help a person who suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is very true that medication helps with the disorder. It helps you focus longer, get things done and evens out emotions as well. But it is by no means a cure all. It is very important to get individual counseling, and possibly family counseling if needed.
